Pigeon Men

After a very long day walking around Varanasi, India, a friend and returned the hotel to change kit, clothes and take a break with a beer on the roof of the hotel.  As we drank our beers we heard whistles and strange screams, after looking to see where this was coming from we saw a flock of pigeons reacting to these strange sounds.

I learned it is a very old tradition all over India to keep fighting pigeons. Its not quite as literal as it sounds, people fly their birds from around 10am-1pm and then leave them to feed and rest for the rest of the day. When the birds are flown their masters control them by whistles to go higher and claps and waving the sticks to go further away.

Many people keep pigeons it for pleasure and some do it for pure competition, the aim to try and capture as many of the neighbour’s birds as possible.
